Ayça İnce (Ek Biç Ye İç) & Begüm Atakan, Pickled it!, 2017, Kitchen Installation

Ek Biç Ye İç (EBYİ) aims to create spaces where one can cultivate and distribute healthy food in a highly urban environment. This approach is brought to bear on the once opulent Abud Effendi Mansion that is now in disrepair. EBYİ invites audiences to evoke the vibrancy of the mansion by participating in a pickling workshop hosted in the mansion’s kitchen. Pickling and fermentation are ancient techniques of preservation and intensification of the nutritional value of vegetables. Seemingly dormant produce is transformed by teeming microscopic life in the pickling jar. Throughout the exhibition, the visitors will participate in the process of preservation through transformation. The workshop will propel pickles back to their deserved place on the kitchen shelves in today’s Istanbul where conservation and preservation is paramount. Ayça İnce, from EBYİ, invites Begüm Atakan to bring her enthusiasm, her research and her own kitchen into the Mansion.
